THE BEGINNING

THE STORY OF THE PARENTS:-

Cheeky

^
CHEEKY. A kAKARIKI HEN.

This is Cheeky a Kakariki hen.She was one of five eggs hatched, she stood out from her brothers and sisters ,that had hatched at the same time. These were our very first chicks. When they were fully fledged we knew we could not keep them all.Having watched them develop their individual personalities
I decided on Cheeky because she was like her mum.(if I had had my way, we would have kept them all)Her Cheeky nature was very endearing hence the name.
Tom is our Golden Mantle Rosella.(picture lower left)My husband Paul decided that he wanted to buy a Rosella. The male have such beautiful colourings. He knew of a breeder that was willing to sell.
All our birds at this time were kept in the house,it was a nightmare letting them out, come to think of it that was the easy part, getting them back into their respective cages was the nightmare. From the moment Cheeky could fly she would make a bee line for Toms cage,Tom at first was apprehensive about leaving his cage,he was very young and still clumsy when it came to flying and landing. They became great friends ,I think she gave him the confidence that he was lacking.
The aviary was ready for the birds to go outside,we spent days taking them out and fetching them back into the house to acclimatize them,we had a variety of 8 birds at this time.Cheeky was put into one part of the aviary and Tom another.Well you would have thought we were trying to murder them ,the racket they made was unbelievable. We moved them so they could see each other but that didn't work either,in the end we put them together just for peace and quiet.
Years went by and all the birds were happy.Cheeky used to lay the odd egg and then throw it out ,we did not think this was odd just a natural event for a hen.
